The Word of God - The Sword of the Spirit

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
- Ephesians 6:17

There is an unseen realm where every course of action is influenced before it is manifest in the physical. Our inner man, that is our spirit, was created to operate and interact within this very intricate and complex dimension. Within this realm there is a constant struggle for supremacy between the forces of good and evil. Jesus Christ heads the good army, His objective; to redeem and restore man with truth and light. Satan heads the evil army, but his fate has already been sealed so in desperation he works extra hard to try and take down with him whoever he can. Accepted or not every single spirit and soul on this planet is involved in this struggle, some purposefully and others passively.

But in the heat of the battle God has not left us as mere civilians but armed us as soldiers and marksmen. One very important weapon we have is the Word of God otherwise known as the ‘sword of the Spirit’ Eph 6:17. The word of God (the bible) is both God’s weaponry and instruction manual for our spirits. In the spirit realm the word of God is multi-faceted and one might equate it to the accuracy of a military sharpshooter with a PSG-1 rifle or to the power of a nuclear tipped warhead. The Word of God is like water to our spirit. It renews us and trains us so that we become more like the image of our creator Col 3:10 – beings with His character that can walk in faith and do the seemingly impossible. The Word of God gives us faith (Rom 10:17) and helps us to discern the voice of God “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.”John 10:27 And as we become more skilled in it we are able to more easily discern between good and evil Heb 5:14.

One of the things Satan fears is a child of God who knows how to use the ‘Word’. At the time Jesus was fasting for 40 days and nights in the wilderness the very thing Satan tried to use to deceive Him was the scriptures. Jesus demonstrated that simple knowledge of the Word of God is not enough, but one must understand it and be able to wield his ‘sword’ wisely. Within scripture Jesus is referred to as ‘The Word became flesh’ John 1:14 and ‘The Word of God’ Rev 19:13 illustrating His authority as the final ‘Word’. And even if everything was to pass away tomorrow; our houses, cars, possessions and heaven and earth, then God’s word will still remain Matt 24:35.

We shouldn’t take God’s word for granted. God created us through His word and so will continue to sustain our spirit through His word.

God bless and protect
