The human mind

…Imagine…you’re a world class 100m sprinter (ok work with me and at least try to imagine). You’re currently ranked number 8 in the world, but your dream is to be number 1 – the best! You’re in tip top condition, you’ve been eating healthy, you feel strong and full of life and your physique is in perfect condition - your abs have even got that 6 pack chisel effect goin on! For the next 2 months you’ve got 4 of the most important races of your life. All of a sudden a well meaning friend, who owns an ice cream parlour, offers you a free daily supply of your favourite vanilla and chocolate brownie swirled ice cream, layered with a hot caramel fudge topping, sprinkled with luxurious chocolate chips under a light whipped topping. Do you accept…NO! It’s killing you but you must say no. Your body’s too important (and if you said yes email me personally and I will say a special prayer for you!). What about your car, you wouldn’t suddenly begin to fill a petrol car with diesel fuel, it wouldn’t function properly. Or even your children, you wouldn’t begin to feed them dog food because it’s the easy thing to do (would you?! - again email me).

My point is this when it comes to the food and the fuel we put into our bodies and material possessions we can often take great care (when we want to) of what goes into them. The area of dieting alone is a multibillion dollar industry. But when it comes to one of the most important area of our lives, our minds, we are often carefree, lackadaisical and casual individuals. Eric Hoffer said We have rudiments of reverence for the human body, but we consider as nothing the rape of the human mind.

Did you know that what goes into your mind affects what gets into your spirit? Did you know that all of your senses influence the mind but your eyes and ears are primary in the process of change and transformation? Did you know that your mental stress levels alone can have a massive effect on your physical body? Apostle Paul said “…do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Rom 12:2 God’s plan is that through our minds we would be revolutionised to prove His good, perfect and acceptable will. In fact for many of us the solutions to our problems lie in breaking through our limiting thinking.

Men are not prisoners of fate, but prisoners of their own minds.”
Franklin D Roosevelt

So how do you start the transformation process? You start by changing what you read, what you watch, what you think, what you say and what and who you listen to. “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable…think about such things.” Phil 4:8. In other words feed your mind with good stuff. It’s so easy to turn on the TV and watch whatever’s ‘interesting’. Or even flick through magazines or the internet and just browse through the curious. It’s almost as easy as eating a chocolate bar or drinking a cola. But the long term effects usually don’t produce the miraculous. We can all do the amazing but first we have to become amazing. And the process begins in our minds. This week I’m going to leave you with these thoughts, within you there’s a giant waiting to come out, but his prison is your mind. Mental transformation assists spiritual transformation, mental transformation aids physical transformation, mental transformation sustains total transformation…think on these things.

God bless and protect

Quote of the week:
“The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make heaven of Hell, and a hell of Heaven.”
John Milton
