Goals - you gotta have em!

“Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you a stock clerk.” -J.C. Penney

Goals are essential. For our faith to work there must be a target. And goals are necessary to help us focus on our target. Whether our desire is an improvement of ourselves or an improvement of our surroundings we must have goals. A common denominator for many of the great achievers of our time has been their ability to set goals and diligently pursue them.

When you set a goal, you immediately energise your mental capacity with hope and anticipation of the possibilities. You now add more purpose to your being. The onus will always be on you to decide what your goals will be in life. If you don’t decide what to do or where you want to go in life, someone else will. For a goal to be effective, two things are vitally important:

  1. Commitment
  2. A plan

“If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.” - Jim Rohn

Without commitment your goal will be at the mercy of daily distractions and seemingly urgent matters. Your goal will also be at the mercy of how you feel on any given day. A plan is necessary to help you prepare for the detailed intricacies of your goal. Many times goals fail not because they were not good or noble goals, but simply because the obstacles, knowledge and resources required were not carefully considered. Jesus emphasised the need to analyse our resources before we begin a project, “ For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it.” Luke 14:28. The Bible is full of stories of men who recognised the importance of planning in fulfilling their goals – Noah and the Ark, Moses and the Tabernacle and Solomon and the Temple. God desires that as we make our plans we are receptive to his direction, “A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”Prov 16:9 Sometimes God will give us specific instructions but when He doesn’t He always desires that we use our faith. Tomorrow’s future starts in today’s goals.

God bless and protect

Quote of the week:
"Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success." - Pablo Picasso
