A lesson from the bumble bee

A thought…

“Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway.” Mary Kay Ash

I saw this quote and was intrigued so did a little research. It turns out that this is true according to conventional aerodynamic principles of fixed wing aircraft. A conventional aircraft can glide through the air because its wingspan and body design are in perfect proportions for flight. Similar to that of an eagle – with outstretched wings it soars through the air. However, if a bumble bee were to try this it would tumble end over end and plummet. The difference is that whereas a bird has a nice static aerodynamic design which allows air to flow easily around it, a bumblebee creates turbulence that flips it around. In fact according to this law its wing span is too small in relation to its weight and the size of its body.

So how does it fly? The answer is found in the way it uses its wings. They move in a very elaborate pattern. They move up and down, and rotate as they do so. It’s actually extremely quick flapping, beating its wings at an average of 130 beats per second (that’s why you that buzzing sound!).

Let’s take a lesson from the humble bumble bee. If the bumble bee were to read all the statistics he might not try to fly. But instead he focuses on what he has and what he believes can be done. Often in life we are also faced with what seems like the impossible. The expectations of others, fading dreams and daily struggles can all take their toll. But I want to encourage you to take a second and think about the possibilities. Think about what can still happen. Be like the bumble bee and look at your resources. You have a spirit that can connect with God, a mind that can be totally reconstructed and a body that can get stronger and stronger. If you can imagine it, it’s attainable. If you can believe it, it’s possible…keep the fire burning.

God bless and protect

If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.
